Have you ever considered bench seating???

I had never thought about bench seating... or at not seriously until I came across an old piano bench at a thrift shop.

And I knew I was in love with the idea.
I am all for miss matching chairs around a dining table so why not add a miss matching distressed bench to the mix?

This is how much bench turned out

not perfect....
but like I always say---
my projects NEVER are!
(that may be why I am so hesitant to open an etsy shop---
what if someone was disappointed with something I made because it wasn't perfect?)

Anyways---back from that tangent.

This is what the bench started out as.
A good old fashioned piano bench.
(an extra bonus to using a piano bench is the storage under the lid!)

Sorry about the before.
Considering how excited I get to paint a treasure like this when I find it, I just feel luck that I have a before picture at all!

This time around I used duck egg blue chalk paint.
After I painted the whole bench I distressed it up to enhance all of the details.
And then I added my wording.

I cut my wording with my Silhouette onto sticky vinyl and then placed the outline onto the bench.

Then I blotted the paint on over top.
The only advice I really have here is don't try to use real brush strokes or you will get lots of paint under your vinyl and the words will look sloppy.

Then you need to wait awhile before you remove the vinyl outline or you will get a sloppy look like you see on the "o" of you.
I have many wonderful qualities (at least that is what hubs says) but patients sure isn't one of them!
And lets face it I love anything that looks a little chip-y and not perfect so I actually kind of love that it looks like that.
My impatience payed off!

I love this look and I am pretty sure I will be grabbing up future piano benches I find at garage sales and thrift stores again!  I could totally see these being great for little people someday!
:o)

Ohh and before I forget, I sealed and finished the piece with wax.
I wanted it to be super durable and washable since it is in the kitchen!

What do you think?
Would you consider bench seating?

  5. so, i'm new to the whole refurnishing thing but have a few pieces i'm wanting to do. i was trying to see if you happen to have a refurnishing tutorial on here but i don't see one. so, any tips? and this is probably a silly question, but what's chalk paint? do you use a paint can or spray paint?

  9. It would have been an improvement just with the paint. But I love love love the phrase you painted on it. So cute and makes it perfect. Plus imperfections makes each piece special (to your etsy comment).

  20. Your bench seat is awesome. Love the color you painted, and you did a fantastic job with the lettering. One blogger once said, "It doesn't have to be perfect." I love that - it freed me to jut try things and not worry if they're not exactly so-so. Actually I'm finding it gives the piece a lot more interest! Thanks for sharing at the Somewhat Simple linky party.

  21. I love it!! You did an amazing job on this! :)
I love the color and I've always loved dinning tables with benches, too bad my dinning room is tall or else I would look to do something like this!

and btw that's the beautiful thing about handmade, nothing is ever "perfect" so don't be scared to open up an etsy shop! :)

  24. What a sweet bench (love the look of mismatched seating in a home, btw), and hope you get a chance to pick up many more that need "reloved" in your travels.

And I say GO FOR IT (for an etsy store). Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?!

  29. I have to work on my "thinking out of the box" skills! I see piano benches sometimes but never think to use them for seating at a dining table. The seat storage would be perfect for table linen! Perfect mix of paint and distressing! Great job!

  45. I am new at this - just thinking about how to start painting furniture, have a few pieces in my house that could be painted. I just saw a little old trunk on craigslist and I will try to copy what you did. I a going to put in my bedroom so the words also fit (oh, romance...)!
I have researched about the paint, found a vendor and even a workshop close to my city (30km??) but will look at michaels' for the stencils, or might have to order at etsy. I live in Vancouver, BC Canada. Thank you for the inspiration!!!!
