House Hunting on my Mind.

Hello friends---how are you?!
I know I have been all out slacking when it comes to blogging...
buttt I swear things are going to turn around sooner than later around here.
I was in a bit of a craft rut, but last night I sat down and had some fun.....
photos to follow I promise!!!
I am just waiting for some nice daylight to take the photos!!

Butttt until then I am 100% in house hunting mode.
Yessss hubbie and I are officially shopping for houses.....
and we are first time shoppers....
uuuuuhhhhh oooohhhh right?!
Each house that I remotely like while touring, I move myself into.....
I decorate.
I fall in love and I get emotionally attached.
I am in trouble right?!
What do you do to separate yourself....???
I think the problem is.....how do you know if you could feel at home unless you picture yourself in a home that you might buy?!
and for me that means decorating and moving in and picturing EVERYTHING......
Hummmmm......

But anyways,

Just in case you are wondering here are a few of my homes that I am currently dreaming of...
Now prepare yourself to see the potential not the immediate beauty okay?!

Starting with this "animal-head infested home"
{literally heads show up in almost each room}
but it is all about seeing potential....
beyond the existing decor....
soooooo here is what I am thinking:

"animal heads be gone"

And enter light and white mantle with cabinets at the same height so that you have LOTS of room to decorate!!!

Orrrr how about light and tall cabinets next to a darker but tall mantle?!

And did you notice that awkward space next to the family room?!  {yep check the photo again and look to your right in the photo....} yep that is a game room right in the living room?!?!? nooooooo I am thinking of something more like this:

Yessss some kind of a nook would be perfect in that area right?!

And then there is the kitchen in the same home....

I think light and white for the cabinets-----yesss I would sooo paint those right on up....
with the dark counters would be great.
Andddd maybe a fun backsplash and a fun wall color would make it perfect!
Ohhhh and some new lighting right?!
Yes pendants!!!

Okay and moving on to the next home....I like to call this one the "blank canvas" house.
because really...... EVERY single wall is white.
White white white......
I like white buttttt I have some other ideas.
Starting with the bedroom.

Ohhhh this bedroom needs some spice:

yes this is perfect. every. single. detail.

but I also love the great planks that show off the high ceilings with this bedroom.
Perhaps a mix?!?!

And on to the living room of the "blank canvas home".

AMAZING but plain.
Great view of a little private lake which is what matters the most to hubbie and I buttttt it could look amazing with some loving right?!

How about some beach-y curtains like these?!?

And some ceilings like this living room?!  Ohhhhhh how what a cool idea to spice up the tall ceilings instead of just painting walls!!!!

And how about these stairs?!

yes they would look amazing just like this!!!

And although this doesn't seem to come along with any of the homes I have seen so far-----

I am always keeping a look out for a space to make this happen.....ohhh how dreamy!!!!
Soooo now that you see what I am dreaming about....
what do you think?
How do I keep my head while house shopping?!
How do I stop myself from moving into each home.
The decorating in my head doesn't help me to not be attached.....
buttttt it just seems to happen....
what do I do?!

Great potential!! Kind of amazing that someone lives in that blank canvas home. That bedroom totally made me laugh! Such AMAZING things that you could do there and that living room would be gorgeous!!! I'm ready to move in if you pass! :)

I don't know how to help you...I'm practically moving my furniture into those houses in my mind lol. Houses are so much fun. I think either of those would be amazing. The second one is so cool. When I moved into my house every wall was white. I made the huge mistake of deciding to paint all of the rooms before we moved in. Well now they've all been painted 3 or 4 times over in 4 years. Take it slow...and enjoy it! What a fun time in your life! We're going to see a few summer houses in Maine this weekend. I can't wait.

My advice:
Be patient…you have time and wait for the right house. Sometimes it is so EXCITING... the newsness….the freedom to decorate….the potential…it is so exciting that you jump on it even though it:
- is more than you wanted to spend
-isn't the kitchen you wanted
-has lots of built in duck cut out cornices
- was built in mid 70's and hasn't been touched
-isn't the exact location you wanted

I've learned that it is better to keep looking. There are so many houses on the market right now you have lots of choices.

My second Advice:
consider what you want in a neighborhood. Is it more important to get a big perfect house or would you rather a smaller house but in a neighborhood where families truly likes each other, kids play outside, together all summer. Do you want to be close to the elementary school your kids (or potential kids will attend. Do you want ot live in a sub that has strict rules and assessments or do you want to avoid that.

My BIG Advice:
Be careful when evaluating schools. This is something that lots of parents have lots of opinions on. A lot of times the "best school" is a myth that takes on a life of it's own. Everyone has an opinion and 90% of the time it is just that- an opinion.

Visit the neighborhood during the day and night. We looked at a house that was fine in the evening but when we went during the day the hog farm in the area stunk…bad.

Have fun…it is fun to get your first house…to get any house really. It is an opportunity to redecorate, to play, to create, to dream.

Cool post! And I am also excited for you. I love some of the photos, specially the animal nested room. Real cute. But I think white painted rooms will look much plainer, you must use some light but cool paint like blue, pink, yellow or pink.

Wow that's so exciting! House hunting seems like such a far away dream to me... so I have no advice. But I can't wait to see what you find & what you do to the place you do buy! Hopefully you have a hubby that brings you back to earth when you start decorating in your mind. My hubby is good at that. It's good that you spent some time renting first in your new town so that you got a feel for where you wanted to be too before you bought. Yea! Buying is happy!! Your mortgage payment will likely be less than rent too... would be around here anyway, we could get a nicer house 2x as big for what we pay in rent :)

We are getting ready to move ourselves and it is so much fun to look at houses! I find myself drawn to homes that "have potential" and need work. In my experience, you just "know" when you find the right house. And I think it's pretty cool that you've pinned almost all the same rooms I have! That kitchen is my favorite!

Good luck with the home search! We're so happy in our current home, our first home, that we've been looking for 5 years (god bless our patient realtor) and still haven't found anything we would trade our current one for. I remember walking into our current home when it was for sale 15 years ago. It only took the foyer to know it was our home. I can't explain it - you just know!

House hunting can be so fun but so exhausting. Know beforehand if you have any deal breakers, (like the washing machine can't be in the garage)

Good luck!

well jaime, lots to think about. buying your first home is quite an 'adventure' shall we say. it's good that you can see beyond things like deer heads. Hey, that fireplace is amazing!!! But then that view of the last one might trump the fireplace. If there isn't one, you can always add one or a woodstove. Can't add a 'view'. Plus- love that open space in the last one. Does if have a craft room is the question though? :) Pam

I'm a Realtor and see houses all of the time and I still picture myself living in them- that probably sounds weird. I think it depends if you are a visual person or not whether you place your furniture in each home. It's funny how everyone is different, surprisingly I've found that with most couples it's the men who want to talk about furniture arrangements- I think its because they don't want to have to buy more furniture :)

I have bought and sold 7 homes since 1988. Been there, done that. lol I don't get emotional anymore. About the only great piece of advice I have is before you bid, make sure you know where the Christmas Tree is going. My mother use to say that and I forgot about it over the years. This past year, I realized that our living room has never been a great Christmas Tree place. lol We bought too small 7 years ago and just can't move in this economy. We would take too much of a loss. So, there....make sure you know where the Christmas Tree will go. lol My mom would be happy!

I have the opposite problem. We found our forever home the 2nd house we looked at but the deal fell apart and we had to walk away. We must have seen over 100 houses after that and I could not picture us in any of them!! It was so frustrating. Thankfully my realtor rocks and she got us back in the game on our dream home. We were able to close 8 mos. later and we couldn't be happier!! So I say if you can picture yourself in a home even better more than one home good for you cus it SUCKS big time when you can't!!

P.S. we closed in Oct. last year, my bloggy bff is closing on her home in feb. and you are looking. Must be the season lol. Good luck!!

Jamie-finding the perfect home is difficult. This is a buyer's market so you will get more for your money. I love the ideas you have planned for your home. No matter which one you choose I know you will make it wonderful. I look forward to Hearing and seeing more of this journey.
